MISSING PERSON
Hance Elliot Robinson disappeared about 1867. Nothing more was heard from him by his family. It was mistakenly reported that he went to WV and died there circa the 1920's. Hance had an uncle, William Robinson, who had removed to Wetzel Co., WV, and was living there at the time of Hance's disappearance. It is felt that it was an obituary of a WV Hanson Robinson that led to the CONJECTURE that Hance had gone to WV. The WV Hanson has been positively eliminated as our Hance; however, his record is recorded here so as to avoid pursuing that research further.
Hanson Perry Robinson [1847-1923] was buried in the Chestnut Grove Cemetery in northern Webster Co., WV, located on the Replete Rd on the hill above the Chestnut Grove Methodist Church. This Hanson married (1) abt 1866 Mrs. Louisa J. Perrine Barnett (md. 20 Apr 1858 to James M. Barnett in Braxton Co., WV); (2) 14 Sep 1902 Mrs. Cynthia J. Forinash in Braxton Co., WV; (3) 22 Jul 1908 Mrs. Nancy Garber in Braxton Co., WV.
The WV Hanson is located on the 1860 census in Braxton Co., WV, age 15 [abt 1845] son of Edward & Mahala Robison. He is on the 1870 census - Webster Co., WV: Holly Twp., p. 14 [124B], 97/95, as Hanson E. Robison, age 25 [abt 1845], He is located on the 1900 census - Webster Co., WV: Hacker Valley District, E.D. 136, p. 10B [69B], 136/136. He was listed as Hanson Robinson b. Mar 1846. He is located on the 1910 census - Braxton Co., WV: Salt Lake District, Weston & Sutton Turnpike, E.D. 16 p. 7B [228B], 134/135 as Hanson P. Robison age 65 [abt 1845].
Thomas Milton Shea had the following to say about Hance's disappearance: "I often talked to the last man to see and talk with grandfather [Hance Elliot Robinson] S.W. Carrier a lumberman. He was getting things arranged to go up to the camp on Monday. Grandfather had made a pair of boots for one of his men and delivered them to S.W. Carrier. This would be a 5 minute walk to his home. [They] never saw or heard anything of him after that. His people claim that he never came home after leaving some 6 years before. He was well [known by] the men that worked in the woods and run timber to Pgh on the Red Bank Creek 34 miles to Red Bank. This is the entrance to the Allegheny River to Pgh. He had a good business often working to midnight. There was no trouble at home. They always got along fine. He owned their home and shop and no one can give a reason why he disappeared". For now the assumption is that he met with foul play.
